Herne Bay Harriers 5 Monkton Youth 4
Harriers returned to League action against
Monkton and as the League positions suggested this was to be a close game.
Monkton struck first with a shot from just within the area but some
excellent passing from one end of the field to the other allowed Ben Tamplin
to chip the advancing keeper to level the score soon after.
The visitors restored their lead when B. Hibben’s clearance hit M. Leppard
and fell kindly for the striker to run onto and leave M. Helman with no
chance in the home goal.
After the restart Harriers took the game to Monkton in determined fashion.
First D. Van Orsouw managed to play a ball between the centre backs on the
turn straight into the path of O. Love who broke from midfield and outran
the defenders and coolly side footed into the corner.
Within a minute Love added his second before the
post mortem to his first had been concluded.
Galvanised by the lead Harriers pressed home the advantage and Tamplin
buried a volley from distance and Love looked certain to complete his hat
trick only to see the keeper make an outstanding save with an outstretched
leg. Unfortunately for him D. Van Orsouw was following up and managed to
fire home despite the crowded goalmouth.
Although three goals adrift, Monkton continued to play good football and
were always threatening. With the loss of T. Inglis and D. Van Orsouw to
injury Harriers had to reshuffle and J. Bennett and S. Parker played out of
their normal positions manfully assisted by B. Hibben and M. Leppard to
repel much of the visitors advances. When they were beaten M. Helman bravely
threw himself at the attackers feet and although the visitors cut the
deficit Harriers were able to see out the clock and collect three valuable
points.
