Hurricanes 1 Herne Bay Harriers 3
Playing against a team top of the league and with a 100% home record, this was going to be a difficult match to get a result.Having dropped points last week, nothing more than a win was required.
In an even opening, both sides pressed forward trying to gain the advantage, but in fairness we created the better chances, restricting Hurricanes to long range efforts. As the half progressed we finally took a couple of the chances we created and took a 2-0 lead.
Hurricanes were determined opponents and never let us rest for a minute. Despite their efforts the only time we looked troubled was when we lost concentration.
Leading 2-0 at half time saw Hurricanes change their tactics and push a second striker on. Excellent defending subdued that threat and during that period we looked the more likely to score, missing several good chances.
Realising that wasn’t working Hurricanes switched back to their normal 2-3-1 formation. We let Hurricanes back into the game after an unfortunate own goal, and for the next period they exerted plenty of pressure, but created very few clear chances. We defended well and looked dangerous on the counter attack, and eventually we were rewarded with a deflected goal to give us a 3-1 lead.
It was a hard physical match and all credit to the lads for their battling performance, and overall I feel we were deserved winners. Whilst I am pleased that our defending this year has improved dramatically, I am a little concerned that our finishing is making games more difficult than they should be.
However, 7 points from 9 against our league contenders isn’t bad. We have a well earned break next week, and need to be in the groove for the upcoming matches thereafter.
